Is my main character gone forever?
First post and it's a bummer.
Finished the quest to get into Vabbi and now the game crashes while trying to load 'Wahhan Terraces'. Unrecoverable graphic driver error.
Tried all the usual: new GW.dat; contacting support and sending Computer test file; changing districts, etc. Nothing works.
All other 8 characters load fine in their current locations but this is the first one I've tried to get into Vabbi. Is there something different about the graphics in this area that would cause such an issue?
I've spent a lot of time with this character and just don't have the heart to go through everything again to get another one to this same place. Really miss it and hope it is not lost in limbo forever.

This guy had the exact same problem: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/w...t10440698.html. That part of Nightfall and several areas of EotN make bad graphics chips fall down.
It's usually a problem with motherboard-based graphics chips. With very few exceptions, they SUCK for gaming.
Temporary solution: log on to your account from the PC of someone you really, really trust and move your character somewhere less graphically demanding.
Permanent solution: Buy a better PC. If it's not a laptop, get a proper graphics card.

hi just a suggestion to try:
launch GW with the switches -dx8 -noshaders
-dx8
Useful for troubleshooting. Forces DirectX 8 compatibility; good for users whose computers are not compatible with the newer version. Using this switch with -noshaders may improve performance as well.

Hope this help you
ciao
P.S: I started with GW in 2005 with a Pentium III 866, a GeForce4 MX and Win98 () and all was playable (nightfall too), not as high-end PC but...

I will answer the non-techie question...you character is fine---the information is stored on anets servers so that character is still in vabbi (at the closest outpost you had unlocked prior to the crash)....your computer is the issue.
You will not lose a character to graphics issues (or I would have lost a bunch)...your data might be corrupted a bit, but that is very fix-able as well. The ONLY way to get rid of a character is to delete them on the character screen ...so that problem is solved.
so get the computer fixed and your character will be there to see you again.
(and yeah my old graphics card had issues with vabbi and the asuran areas of eye...black screens et. al)

Thanks for the help.
Snograt, good call and suggestion. I am running GW on a 1.2 netbook with basic onboard Intel chip set. I kinda thought that might be the problem but was hoping it wasn't since the game ran so well up to this point.
I can get my son to load GW and move the character.
Ubiko: no change in result using the switches but thanks for the suggestion.
Update:
I guess I won't be able to finish the NF and EoTN campaigns on the netbook but I was able to use the PC @ my son's house to get the character moved to a compatible location. Someday I'll upgrade the HW and finish them but that will just have to wait.

There's not really any way to upgrade the hardware in the netbook. If you want to be able to play on a netbook, and are willing to get another one, get a new netbook using an AMD Fusion chip.
Or get an actual laptop. In either case stay away from Intel graphics. Only go for nVidia or AMD.
P.S. I'm not sure how well the new on-chip Intel graphics (in the i3, i5, etc. chips) are at handling things like GW, but I wouldn't count on it.

After further research, the Wiki site for Wehhan Terraces had a link to permanent fix for my problem:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/g...tml?t=10408301
So far, it seems to be working. Using the Netbook, I am in Wehhan Terraces and there seems to be no bugs (fingers crossed). Maybe, I can finish all the campaigns on this little machine.
